Can you believe it’s that time of year again for school to be back in session?
While many of us may welcome the new season where our kids go off to school there are many other challenges to overcome while running a business from home at the same time.
It’s easy to loose track of your day with activities, school meetings, sick days, and holidays not to mention transportation if you also hold the taxi cab title in your household.
So how do you keep this all in balance with the new schedule?
Here are some helpful tips to help you keep your sanity as well as being both productive and efficient:
Create new goals
Now that the school schedule has begun you may need to re-work your day in order to fulfill your daily tasks. This might look like more interruptions in your work day and shorter time periods for work. With that in mind make a realistic schedule of what needs to be done for each day. For example, if you can only get one project done before the bell rings what can you accomplish after that before heading off to an activity or making dinner? By writing down a specific time frame with the use of a timer you will be able to establish a new routine.
Make a specific time for your personal agenda
Make it a point to work without any distractions except when it comes to an emergency. Even blocking off just two hours in a dedicated space can help you achieve a lot more than stopping and starting. Minimize appointments and grocery shopping trips by scheduling these for a lighter workload day or for after school. Remember that you are the CEO of your own company and that you work for yourself — this will help keep you accountable along with the help of productivity apps.
Ignite your creativity
Use the new school day to your advantage and engage in online education, webinars, brainstorming sessions, ect. The Fall season is a good time to plan for mapping out the New Year’s goals as well as getting inspiration to help you move forward. Think of this time as a blessing to your routine and an opportunity to learn more so that you can start generating creative ideas.
Give your body rest
You may find yourself waking up earlier to get the kids off to school. Factor this into how it will affect your focus and energy as well. Give yourself small breaks throughout the day and get to bed an hour earlier. The more sleep that you get the better able you will become at finishing important projects without crashing mid-day. Good nutrition goes along with this — I always drink a glass of water before the coffee pot is on, and keep a supply of fruit, dry fruit, nuts, yogurt, and other healthy items on hand for breakfast and lunch. Try to walk at least 30 minutes a day or get moving indoors if the weather is bed to boost your energy even more.
Enlist the help of others
Sometimes we may need a little extra help while managing our work along with raising a family. Is there someone who can help with transportation with your kids? Can you outsource any of your other tasks to another freelancer? Don’t be tempted to take on everything yourself, and if your kids are old enough delegate household tasks that they can participate in such as cooking and cleaning.
The new school year can seem daunting at first, but when you take these simple steps each day you can help keep your day on track without losing control or energy.
